GEO for B2B businesses in Indonesia: why it matters now
B2B buyers now open ChatGPT and Perplexity to screen vendors before contacting anyone. If AI doesn’t name a brand in that answer, the brand isn’t in the consideration set — and loses the pipeline before the first conversation starts. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) makes sure a brand appears inside the answer that now replaces the buyer’s early research.
Why this is a B2B problem, not just an AI trend
The B2B buying cycle starts with quiet research: finding suppliers, comparing options, building a shortlist — all before a single email. That research used to mean working through Google results. Now much of it has moved to one question put to an AI engine that answers directly with two or three names. Pew Research measured the shift: clicks to results fell to 8% when an AI summary is present, from 15% without one; Search Engine Land puts the broader figure at roughly two-thirds of Google searches ending without a click. For high-value deals with short shortlists, being absent from the answer means being absent from the deal.
Why a brand doesn’t show up in ChatGPT
Usually it isn’t the website’s fault — it’s that the engine has only seen the brand’s claim in one place: the brand’s own site. An engine assembles its answer from several sources that agree, so a claim standing alone on an owned page rarely earns a citation. Semrush found Reddit in 40.1% of AI answers and Wikipedia in 26.3%; Muck Rack, across 25M+ links, found earned media accounts for ~84% of citations. Without third-party confirmation, even a tidy site struggles to enter the answer.
Why moving early matters
Authority in AI search compounds the way domain authority once did: whoever builds a position early gets harder to displace each month. In niche B2B categories — suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, professional services — often only a handful of brands are worth citing for a given buyer question. The brand that fills that space first becomes the default answer; the one that waits six to twelve months isn’t standing still, it’s watching a competitor become its citation.
Where to start
Start from the questions buyers actually ask — “best supplier for X,” “Y provider in Indonesia” — and measure whether the engine names you there. That’s the honest starting point, and the method is laid out in how to measure brand visibility in AI. For the full definition and mechanics of GEO, see what is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
