What is Narrative Architecture?
Narrative Architecture is the discipline of engineering the five signals an AI engine weighs before it names a brand — Authority, Corroboration, Consensus, Relevance, and Retrievability — so a brand’s story stays coherent to human readers and legible to the AI engines that now write the answer. Done well, it gets a brand retrieved, understood, and cited when people ask AI about its category.
The five members
These five are what an engine reads before it commits a name to an answer. They are the definition of the work:
- Authority — the core facts stated plainly and accurately, on a source the model can trust.
- Corroboration — independent confirmation from credible third parties, not just the brand’s own claim.
- Consensus — agreement across many sources and communities, so the claim recurs rather than sits alone.
- Relevance — fit to the exact question being asked, in the language the buyer uses.
- Retrievability — how easily the information is found, read, and re-read by the machine. A brand named in AI answers is strong on all five; a brand that’s absent is usually missing one or more. Narrative Architecture is the deliberate work of raising each.
What AI actually cites
The five aren’t a theory — they show up in what engines quote. Semrush’s analysis of the most-cited domains found Reddit in 40.1% of AI answers and Wikipedia in 26.3% (Consensus and Corroboration ahead of owned pages). Muck Rack, across 25M+ links, found earned media accounts for ~84% of citations, paid near 0.3% (Corroboration over amplification). Princeton’s GEO research found content backed by statistics earned ~41% more visibility and external sources lifted lower-ranked content up to 115% (Authority the engine can verify). The engine assembles an answer from several sources that agree — no single one carries it.
How we build it — four functions, one rail
If the five members are what the engine weighs, the four functions are how a brand builds toward them. Each content function feeds specific signals:
| Function | Source | Builds |
|---|---|---|
| Ground Truth | Owned | Authority — the clean, liftable claim |
| Validation | Earned | Corroboration — independent confirmation (~84% of citations) |
| Circulation | Shared | Consensus — repetition across communities (the Reddit/Wikipedia pattern) |
| Acceleration | Paid | Reach and tempo — speeding Relevance and Retrievability, not a seat in the answer by itself |
| Wrapped around all four is a Monitoring rail — checking how the brand actually surfaces across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google’s AI answers, then feeding what it finds back into each function. It’s what turns a one-time build into something that compounds, and it’s where the five members get measured. |
Why a single beautiful website is rarely enough
A brand can state its case perfectly on its own site and still be missing from the answer, because the engine has seen the claim in only one place — from an interested party. Authority alone isn’t enough without Corroboration and Consensus. That’s why Narrative Architecture is structural, not cosmetic: it raises all five signals at once, from more than one direction.
Why it matters now
As buyers move from choosing among ten links to receiving a single answer with two or three names, a brand weak on these five risks never appearing at all. Narrative Architecture is how a brand makes sure it’s inside that answer, not outside it.
White Wood is the Narrative Architecture studio in Jakarta that developed the discipline, helping brands get found, understood, and trusted by AI.
